Tinerele sunt prinse între dorința de independență și devotamentul față de familie, lipsurile materiale și ambițiile unei cariere artistice, relațiile deschise și sincere din familie, dar și tensiunile care le pot îndepărta unele de altele. Fiecare are un vis și caută să-și croiască propriul drum. Și, deși fiecare urmează altă cale, revin în familie ca la o matcă iubitoare, iar reuniunile se dovedesc mereu emoționante.
Deși are un nucleu romantic, “Little Women” nu este deloc o poveste tipică de dragoste: surorile March tânjesc nu doar după iubire, ci după o iubire sinceră, între doi parteneri egali. Protagonista Jo March este interpretată de Saoirse Ronan, care,la doar 26 de ani, are deja în palmares patru nominalizări la Oscar, patru la premiile BAFTA, un trofeu și trei nominalizări la Globurile de Aur, inclusiv pentru “Lady Bird”, regizat tot de Gerwig (care deține, la rândul ei, trei nominalizări la Premiile Academiei).
