“The Taming of the Shrew” („Îmblânzirea scorpiei”), lansat în 1967, este un film care are la bază piesa de teatru cu același nume scrisă de William Shakespeare, considerat cel mai mare scriitor al literaturii de limbă engleză. Regia este semnată de Franco Zeffirelli, pe care îl consider genial. (“Romeo and Juliet” 1968, “Tea with Mussolini” 1999, “Callas Forever” 2002, sunt doar câteva din filmele regizate de maestrul Zeffirelli).
Acțiunea filmului se petrece în Padova. Baptista Minola (Michael Hordern) încearcă să își căsătorească cele două fiice, Bianca (Natasha Pyne) și Katharina (Elizabeth Taylor). Totuși, Baptista își va căsători fiicele cu o condiție, Bianca, fiica cea mică va avea voie să se căsătorească doar dacă cineva o va lua de soție pe sora sa cea mare, Katharina. Katharina este o femeie temperamentală, considerată o scorpie, iar tatăl său se teme că niciun bărbat nu va dori să o ia de soție.
Petruchio, un tânăr din Verona, ajunge în Padova pentru a-și găsi o soție. La sugestia unui prieten, el este de acord să se căsătorească cu Katharina. După nuntă, cei doi pleacă să locuiască în casa sărăcăcioasă a lui Petruchio din Verona. Katharina este supusă la umilințe și îi este foarte greu să se obișnuiască cu noua viață. „Îmblânzirea” Katharinei este un proces complex, de cunoaștere și de autocunoaștere, iar Katharina devine victima umilințelor lui Petruchio.
O scenă interesantă mi s-a părut cea în care Petruchio o urmărește pe Kate prin toată casa, ajungând chiar pe acoperiș. Dialogul dintre ei, care are loc în timp ce Kate încearcă fără succes să scape de Petruchio, este, în opinia mea, bine construit și bine redat de cei doi actori.
Costumele sunt de-a dreptul impresionante. Elizabeth poartă rochii superbe, îndeosebi rochia de mireasă, care este spectaculoasă (scena după nuntă, când Kate cade în apă și murdărește minunata rochie de noroi, m-a întristat!). În schimb, costumele purtate de Burton tind să fie ridicole, adăugând o porție de nebunie personajului.
Filmările au avut loc în Italia. Discursul final al lui Kate este interpretat de Elizabeth fără o ironie evidentă, totuși, „îmblânzirea sa” se termină atunci când ea iese din sală fără acordul lui Petruchio, iar acesta este nevoit să își facă loc prin mulțime pentru a o găsi. Katharina este o femeie inteligentă și independentă și nu vrea să joace rolul fiicei supuse sau al soției supuse.
Richard Burton este Petruchio, un bărbat al cărui comportament este greu de înțeles în anumite situații. El este egoist, dorește să se căsătorească cu o femeie bogată. El o ia de soție pe Katharina, pe care încearcă să o domine, umilind-o în numeroase ocazii, inclusiv la propria lor nuntă. Petruchio poate fi văzut, pe de o parte, ca o persoană care consideră căsătoria un act de dominare, dar, pe de altă parte, el s-ar putea să o iubească cu adevărat pe Kate, iar planul său de „îmblânzire” să fie doar o modalitate de a ajunge să aibă o căsnicie fericită și liniștită alături de soția sa.
