„Dacă romanul are o temă, e cea a supraviețuirii. Ce-i face pe unii să țină piept catastrofelor și pe alții, în aparență la fel de capabili, puternici și bravi, să dispară? Se întâmplă în fiecare revoluție. Unii supraviețuiesc, alții nu. Ce calitate există în cei care-și croiesc drum, triumfători, dar lipsește în cei care eșuează? Știu doar că supraviețuitorii obișnuiau să o numească ”curaj”. Așa că am scris despre oameni care au avut curaj și oameni care nu au avut.”
În acest context se desfășoară viața încrâncenată a lui Scarlett O’Hara, o tânără care încearcă să treacă peste toate catastrofele provocate de războiul civil, înarmată doar cu dragoste oarbă și curaj nemărginit. Desigur că o asemenea poveste a fost la scurt timp ecranizată, rezultatul fiind o adevărată capodoperă premiată cu 9 Oscar-uri și lăudată chiar și acum, după aproape 80 de ani. Sunt sigură că nu doar eu revăd cu plăcere acest film, care a cucerit fanii prin povestea și, mai ales, prestațiile strălucitoare ale unor actori intrați în istorie. Dacă vă întrebați încă de ce această poveste mai e și acum de actualitate, analizați mai în detaliu temele principale: supraviețuire și curaj, pasiunea încăpățânată a sufletelor tinere, puterea de a nu renunța și dragostea bolnăvicioasă pentru bani. Și acum, să înceapă lupta!
1. Actori/personaje: Vivien Leigh face rolul vieții ei – personajul pare scris parcă în așa fel încât să i se potrivească frumoasei brunete. Deși nu se știe cu exactitate care variantă este corectă în ceea ce privește alegerea lui Vivien pentru rolul lui Scarlett, de un lucru putem fi siguri: concurența a fost groaznică – 1400 de actrițe au participat la casting, inclusiv nume cunoscute ale vremii, precum Katharine Hepburn și Olivia de Havilland (cea care ulterior a primit rolul lui Melanie – și bine a mai prins-o!). Unii susțin că Vivien Leigh semnase deja un contract încă de la începutul lui 1938, iar casting-ul a fost doar o faţadă pentru a menţine publicul cu sufletul la gură, alţii spun că fratele producătorului i-ar fi prezentat-o pe actriţă şi i-ar fi spus ‚‚David, iat-o pe Scarlett O’Hara’’. Cert este că Vivien Leigh a făcut o treabă minunată portretizând-o pe Scarlett O’Hara, fata de fier care se transformă încet-încet, dintr-o tânără nepăsătoare şi alintată, într-o femeie puternică, gata să facă orice pentru ca ea şi familia ei să nu mai sufere niciodată. Actriţa reuşeşte să îmbine perfect fineţea şi delicateţea unei domnişoare educate cu încrâncenarea şi încăpăţânarea ce o caracterizează pe Scarlett, datorită sângelui său irlandez. La fel ca în carte, Scarlett O’Hara este figura centrală a romanului. Egoistă, materialistă, oportunistă până la extrem, ea frapează întreaga societate prin comportamentul considerat neadecvat – muncind cot la cot cu negrii pe plantație atunci când războiul îi lasă pe O’Hara săraci lipiți sau administrându-și propria fabrică de cherestea. Scarlett nesocotește regulile nescrise ale societății în care trăiește și-și pierde reputația în favoarea bunăstării ei, a familiei sale și a Tarei, ocupând astfel o poziție menită să fie a unui bărbat.
Cât despre Rhett – se pare că rolul îi era destinat iniţial lui Gary Cooper, care l-a refuzat, declarând că acest film va fi un fiasco. Probabil a murit de ciudă când și-a dat seama că Gable nu a eșuat, ci a dat viaţă unuia dintre cele mai iubite personaje din istoria filmului. Deși nu ținuse neapărat să facă parte din distribuție, ba chiar voise să renunțe la rol în momentul în care a aflat că va trebui să plângă într-o anumită scenă, Clark Gable a continuat totuşi, câştigând astfel nu doar un cec în valoare de 120.000 de dolari, ci şi admiraţia a milioane de fani. Rhett Butler, echivalentul feminin al oportunistei Scarlett, este singurul care-o poate salva de obsesia ei bolnăvicioasă; deși asemănători în multe privințe, ”because we are so much alike, renegades, both of us, dear, and selfish rascals. Neither of us cares a rap if the whole world goes to pot, so long as we are safe and comfortable”, Rhett se diferențiază de sufletul său pereche prin capacitatea de a iubi pe altcineva mai mult decât pe sine. Este fantastică acea chimie dintre actori, care face legătura dintre personaje să pară încă și mai extraordinară.
Acestea fiind spuse, cum să-ți poți imagina pe altcineva în aceste roluri? Toate personajele sunt genial aduse la viață, până și enervantul de Ashley. Dacă unele au fost omise din film, Mammy a umplut golul rămas, arătând încă o dată că și regizorii/scenariștii pot avea contribuții minunate. Trebuie doar ca fanii să nu mai fie atât de obositor de sâcâitori și să accepte că niciodată nu vor putea fi transpuse toate evenimentele dintr-o carte într-un film. Valabil și pentru personaje.
2. Scenariu/Fir(e) narativ(e): Singurul reproş major pe care i l-aş aduce filmului este că nu reuşeşte să redea toate scenele cu adevărat emoţionante din carte. De exemplu, scena în care Ashley se întoarce din război, la Tara, iar Melanie aproape îi zboară în braţe, este modificată în aşa fel încât Mammy să preia din atribuţiile lui Will (personaj care nu apare în film). Dar scena din carte este mult mai emoţionantă şi mai frumos construită tocmai pentru că un bărbat apărut de nicăieri reuşeşte să citească în sufletul lui Scarlett ca într-o carte deschisă. Deși am început analiza acestor două criterii într-o notă negativă, acest mic defect e singurul care face diferența între scenariul filmului și firul narativ al cărții. În rest, ecranizarea păstrează, în măsură de 90%, atmosfera şi firul narativ iniţial, nu degeaba este una dintre cele mai fidele ecranizări pe care le-am văzut vreodată. Atmosfera din carte, când plină de viaţă, când bântuită de fantasmele morţii, este excelent reprodusă în film. De obicei, cartea e singura care te poate face să te scufunzi în poveste ca într-o apă caldă şi primitoare, dar e uimitor cum filmul îţi dă exact aceeaşi senzaţie.
3. Regie/Tehnică narativă: Presiunea pusă pe umerii producătorilor trebuie să fi fost uriașă, dacă ne gândim la succesul colosal avut de roman. David O. Selznik a avut de trecut peste multe obstacole până a reușit să pună în scenă povestea lui Margaret Mitchell. De partea regizorală s-au ocupat 3 persoane – George Cukor, Sam Wood şi Victor Fleming, primii doi necreditaţi – care au reușit să creeze atmosfera din carte, portretizând o lume devenită haotică și sângeroasă din cauza războiului, cel mai urât personaj din roman. Cartea este totuși mai complexă, deoarece îmbină mai multe genuri și reușește să creeze o poveste de neuitat, poate cea mai iubită poveste despre Statele Confederate ale Americii. Se regăsesc în ea influențe ale romanului psihologic (în pasajele în care este prezentată zbuciumata viață interioară a lui Scarlett) și ale bildungsromanului (unul dintre firele conducătoare ale poveștii este reprezentat de evoluția lui Scarlett). Structura de bază este însă o combinație între romanul de dragoste și cel istoric – pe parcursul celor 1500 de pagini, nenumărate pasaje descriu viața crâncenă a soldaților Confederației, tacticile de război, urmările provocate de ciocnirea celor 2 civilizații pe câmpul de luptă. Margaret Mitchell e cazul tipic de narator omniscient, care se folosește de personajul principal pentru a-și expune ideile și părerile legate de război. Câteodată, viziunea narativă se schimbă, deoarece naratorul și personajul nu mai sunt atât de diferențiați, din contră, par să se confunde unul cu celălalt. De aceea e greu să depășești tu, ca regizor, scriitorul operei originale, care dictează tonul și își vrăjește cititorii în cele mai subtile moduri.
4. Coloană sonoră/Scriitură: Când mi-aduc aminte de muzica ce răsună pe fundalul acestei povești, mi se face pielea de găină. „Tara’s Theme” este una dintre cele mai cunoscute din istoria cinematografiei, realizată bineînţeles de Max Steiner, dirijorul care a condus The Warner Brothers Studios Orchestra, cea care a interpretat coloana sonoră din Casablanca. Așa că n-ar trebui să fiți surprinși dacă nu știu ce să aleg dintre muzica și cuvintele atent alese de scriitoarea care ne-a cucerit de la prima pagină. Poate ar trebui să adaug aici și costumele, care să concureze de asemenea cu scriitura. Susţinută de cheltuielile exorbitante ale producţiei, garderoba personajelor este de vis, ruptă cu totul din altă lume. Și că veni vorba de frumuseţe – cadrele superbe din Twelve Oaks sau apusurile de la Tara au fost pictate de mână! Chiar așa, să mai spună cineva că-ți trebuie efecte ca să faci un film bun – iată că acestea pot fi uimitoare așa simple. Nu degeaba filmul a luat Oscar-ul luat pentru cea mai bună imagine, deoarece Pe aripile vântului arată superb chiar şi acum, datorită eforturilor echipei de restaurare digitală de la Warner Bros. şi a noilor tehnologii.
În concluzie, o carte fantastică a stat la baza unei producții cinematografice de neuitat, fiecare dintre cele 2 fiind specială în felul său, căci nu poți să citești un pasaj din carte fără să ți-o imaginezi pe Vivien Leigh în rolul lui Scarlett sau pe Clark Gable în rolul lui Rhett. Recomand întâi vizionarea filmului, apoi cartea – 1500 de pagini nu se citesc ușor, dar merită fiecare secundă petrecută în fața literelor negre.
