O poveste de vară despre nesiguranță și promisiuni neîmplinite de iubire, aparențe și prejudecăți, pierdere și regăsire într-un grup de prieteni care-și petrec vacanța la malul Mării Baltice, în timp ce pădurea din jurul lor arde.
Leon (Thomas Schubert) şi Felix (Langston Uibel) plănuiesc să-și petreacă vara în casa de vacanță a familiei lui Felix, în pădurile de pe litoralul Mării Baltice. Cei doi prieteni vor să şi lucreze, unul la cel de-al doilea roman al său, celălalt la completarea portofoliului artistic. Însă, vacanța celor doi ia o întorsătură neașteptată: casa este deja ocupată de misterioasa Nadja (Paula Beer) și iubitul ei salvamar, Devid (Enno Trebs). Emoțiile celor patru se aprind la fel ca incendiile de vegetație din jurul lor. Fericire, poftă de viață și iubire, dar și gelozii, resentimente și tensiuni. Între timp pădurile ard. Și în scurt timp, flăcările sunt acolo.

Francezii au filme de vară. Au vacanțe de două luni și în acest timp primesc ceea ce se numește educație sentimentală. Sunt foarte enervat că noi, germanii, suntem regresivi în timpul verii, în timp ce ceilalți se cunosc și se rănesc. M-am gândit la asta și apoi am citit o povestire de Cehov, despre doi ratați care își petrec vara pe o moșie mare. La moșia de alături locuiesc două tinere care le sunt cu totul superioare. Abia după ce distrug totul, cei doi bărbați își dau seama că acelea au fost femeile vieții lor și că nu le vor mai vedea niciodată. Au stricat totul. Și toate acestea se întâmplă de-a lungul a 10 pagini, un raport despre ceea ce au pierdut”.
Despre În bătaia focului/ Afire publicația Indiewire spune că „se află undeva între teritoriul regretatului Éric Rohmer și un Noah Baumbach vintage”, în timp ce ScreenAnarchy cataloghează filmul drept „o dramedie de vară ca nici o alta, care oferă diferite nuanțe de tragicomedie și o porție răcoritoare de atitudine post-pandemică: Nu vă luați atât de în serios! Chiar dacă lumea arde.”
Christian Petzold (62 de ani), regizorul și scenaristul filmului, reprezentant al mișcării intitulate Școala din Berlin, consacrată la începutul anilor ‘90, se află la cea de-a treia colaborare a sa cu actrița Paula Beer, cu care a mai lucrat anterior la Transit și Undine, aceasta din urmă fiind titlul care i-a adus premiul pentru cea mai bună actriță la Berlinale 2020.
