Cea de-a 57-a ediție a celui mai important eveniment cinematografic din Cehia, Festivalul Internațional de Film de la Karlovy Vary debutează astăzi.
Drama suprarealistă „Mammalia”, regizată de Sebastian Mihăilescu, va fi proiectată chiar în prima zi a prestigiosului eveniment, filmul fiind inclus în selecția oficială a programului Imagina, secțiune care aduce în prim-plan producții cu o abordare neconvențională a narațiunii și a stilului. Selecția Imagina se concentrează pe viziuni distincte și radicale ale limbajului cinematografic.
Proiecția din această seară va avea loc la Husovka Theatre, de la ora locală 22:30. „Mammalia” mai are programate două proiecții, în prezența echipei, pe 3 iulie de la ora 21:00 la
Čas Cinema și pe 4 iulie de la ora 13:30 la Husovka Theatre .
Regizorul Sebastian Mihăilescu, actorul István Téglás, producătoarea Ada Solomon și monteurul Cătălin Cristuțiu vor fi prezenți la întâlnirea cu publicul din cadrul Festivalului. Participarea românească este susținută de Centrul Național al Cinematografiei și Institutul Cultural Român.
„Mammalia” are premiera pe marile ecrane din România pe 22 septembrie 2023, fiind distribuită de microMULTILATERAL. Filmul a fost proiectat luna această în avanpremieră națională la Cluj-Napoca în cadrul TIFF.
Lungmetrajul a avut premiera mondială, la începutul anului, în cadrul Festivalului Internațional de Film de la Berlin, „Mammalia” fiind proiectată în programul Berlinale Forum.
Pelicula și-a continuat traseul internațional la Festivalul de Film din Uruguay și a fost inclusă în Competiția SMART7, un program itinerant care pune accentul pe voci inovatoare, fondat de șapte prestigioase festivaluri de film europene.
„Mammalia” (România, Germania, Polonia) este o călătorie suprarealistă prin criza masculinității și îmbină drama cu misterul și comedia.
Camil, un bărbat în vârstă de 39 de ani, se lansează într-o călătorie onirică în care banalul și fantasticul se întrepătrund. Odată cu pierderea controlului asupra muncii lui, asupra statutului social și asupra relației lui amoroase, pornește într-o căutare care îl face să-și chestioneze identitatea și masculinitatea. Pe urmele partenerei lui, ajunge într-o comunitate bizară, cu ritualuri tulburătoare, în care, în cele din urmă, se confruntă cu o răsturnare tragicomică de roluri.
„Mammalia” este o explorare incisivă a perspectivei masculine asupra vieții și a luptei împotriva capitulării în fața experiențelor copleșitoare, împotriva pasivității, împotriva fricii de a pierde controlul și echilibrul. Cu acest film, încerc să mă îndepărtez de realism și naturalism, să mă îndepărtez de cuvinte și să mă apropii de imagini, să deconstruiesc narațiunea și arhetipul eroului masculin. Pentru că eu cred că în artă este mai important să pui întrebările potrivite decât să dai răspunsuri de-a gata.”, spune regizorul Sebastian Mihăilescu.
Din distribuție fac parte István Téglás, Mălina Manovici, Denisa Nicolae, Steliana Bălăcianu, Rolando Matsangos, Mirela Crețan, Andreea Gheorghe, Mircea Bujoreanu, Marian Pîrvu, Dan Zarug Mihai și Elena Chingălată.
Sebastian Mihăilescu a scris scenariul împreună cu Andrei Epure. Producători executivi sunt Dan Wechsler, Andreas Roald și Jamal Zeinal-Zade, producător asociat – Antoine Simkine, coproducătoare – Ewa Puszczyńska și Nina Frese, iar producătoare sunt Diana Păroiu și Ada Solomon.

Sebastian Mihăilescu este scenarist, regizor și producător. După ce a obținut diploma de licență în informatică, a urmat cursuri de licență și de master de regie de film în cadrul Universității Naționale de Artă Teatrală și Cinematografică „I. L. Caragiale” din București.
A debutat în regie în 2012, cu scurtmetrajul documentar „Titza”, care a fost urmat de trei producții scurte de ficțiune. Dintre ele, scurtmetrajul „Apartament interbelic, zonă superbă, ultracentrală” (2016) a avut premiera în competiția Pardi di Domani a Festivalului Internațional de Film de la Locarno.
Lungmetrajul documentar „Pentru mine tu ești Ceaușescu”, realizat de Sebastian Mihăilescu în 2021, a fost recompensat cu premiul pentru cel mai bun film din Europa Centrală și de Est și premiul pentru cea mai bună imagine la Ji.hlava IFF, cu premiul New Talent la Festivalul DocLisboa și a fost desemnat cel mai bun documentar în competiția What’s Up Doc, la Transilvania IFF.
Sebastian Mihăilescu experimentează constant cu limbajul cinematografic, îndepărtându-se de convențiile ficțiunii și împingând limitele acestui mediu.
