Bazat pe biografia American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer de Kai Bird și Martin J. Sherwin, filmul ne prezintă viața „părintelui bombei atomice”.
Oppenheimer este portretizat ca un geniu arogant, cu o abilitate extraordinară de a vizualiza concepte teoretice avansate. El fost venerat, în timp ce era foarte displăcut, și vom afla cum a gestionat Proiectul Manhattan, care a aruncat lumea în era nucleară și în pragul anihilării.
Oppenheimer este povestit în mai multe linii temporale. Nolan deschide cu Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) în 1954. El este interogat de un comitet al Comisiei pentru Energie Atomică (AEC) din SUA. Oppenheimer cumpără împreună cu fratele său mai mic, Frank (Dylan Arnold), un comunist înregistrat, o fermă, care avea să devină cheia dezvoltării celei mai secrete unități de cercetare nucleară din America.
Debutul celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial ridică miza. Oppenheimer și principalele minți științifice ale țării știau că naziștii urmăreau o armă nucleară.
