O viață minunată, titlu original It’s a Wonderful Life e un film specific Crăciunului lansat în 1946 în regia lui Frank Capra. În 1998 a fost votat pe locul 11 în lista celor mai bune 100 de filme, listă realizată de Insititutul American de Film; iar în 2007 s-a clasat pe poziția 20. Scenariul se bazează pe povestirea The gratest gift, scrisă de Philip Van Doren Stern, scrisă în 1939, dar publicată abia în 1945. Filmul este considerat ca fiind unul dintre cele mai îndrăgite din cinematografia americană și a devenit o tradiție vizionarea acestuia în timpul sezonului de Crăciun în SUA.
Un tânăr cu un suflet mare pe nume George Bailey (James Stewart), creşte în micuţul orăşel Bedford Falls, Connecticut, dar visează să călătorească în jurul lumii. Datoria pe care o are faţă de comunitate îl împiedică să-şi îndeplinească visele. Dar se consolează o dată ce se însoară cu Mary (Donna Reed) şi îşi întemeiază o familie. Datorită simţului său filantropi, îi îndeamnă şi îi sprijină pe muncitorii din Bedford Falls să-şi construiască casele proprii. În momentul în care ajunge să-i lipsească 8000 de dolari şi cu bancherul Potter (Lionel Barrymore) care ameninţă să-i ia afacerea, George devine atât de deprimat încât vrea să se sinucidă, aruncându-se de pe un pod. Dar cum se apropie Crăciunul, îngerul său păzitor, Clarenece (Henry Travers) e trimis din Rai pentru a-i arăta lui Goerge cum ar arăta oraşul dacă acesta nu ar fi existat deloc. În momentul în care George şi-ar da seama de valoarea sa şi ar renunţa a suicid atunci oraşul se va întoarce la normal, iar îngeul său păzitor şi-ar recăpăta aripile.
James Stewart a fost cât pe ce să refuze rolul oferit deoarece era încă obosit după război. Criticii au avut păreri împărţite în momentul lansării, dar cu timpul s-a dovedit a fi cel mai îndrăgit film de Crăciun din toate timpurile. Prin 1960 copyrightul a expirat ceea ce a făcut să fie difuzat foarte des la TV în timpul sărbătorilor de iarnă. Cu timpul a devenit o peliculă nelipsită din vizionările de familie. Prin anii 1970 posturile publice i-au „cimentat” reputația de film de calitate programându-l simultan cu emisunile superficiale de sezon . E un film al negru care a fost remasterizat color. Nu l-am vizionat niciodată color pentru că în România s-a lansat doar varianta alb negru.
La 60 ani de la lansare O viață minunată rămâne filmul preferat la americanilor pe timpul sărbătorilor de iarnă datorită mesajului său optimist „ce-ar fi dacă…”. Trebuie să vă spun că în momentul lansării O viață minunată a fost un flop ca alte filme mari gen: Tron sau Blade runner. E posibil doar să se fi lansat în cinematografe într-un moment nepotrivit. Din punctul meu de vedere nu doar jocul actoricesc a fost excepțional, ci și scenariul scris de Dorothy Parker, Dalton Trumbo și Clifford Odets. Acesta e un film în care scenariul și jocul actoricesc fac totul. Așa se întâmpla în filmele „antice”. În blockbusterele de acum scenariul și jocul actoricesc sunt ignorate. Predomină efectele speciale și ecranul verde. E un film care chiar merită revăzut în preajma sărbătorilor de iarnă.
O viață minunată a primit un Glob de Aur pentru cel mai bun regiyor și alte 5 nominalizări la premiile Oscar pentru: cel mai bun film, cel mai bun sunet, cel mai bun montaj, cel mai bun regizor, cel mai bun actor în rol principal. Din păcate nu a câștigat niciun premiu Oscar.
O viață minunată s-a lansat în România pe DVD și costă doar 15 lei.
