Povestea filmului îl are în centru pe unul dintre eroii dramaticului incident, Mike Williams, şi va înfăţişa curajul dovedit în momentele extreme, declanşate de lupta pentru supravieţuire. Scenariul se bazează pe „cel mai mare dezastru ecologic al secolului XXI”, petrecut la data de 20 aprilie 2010, ca urmare a exploziei platformei petroliere Deepwater Horizon, aflată la 1.500 m adâncime în Golful Mexic şi la aproximativ 65 de km de Venice (Louisiana). Deversările de petrol nu doar că au afectat întreaga coastă meridională şi sud-orientală a Statelor Unite, însă au dat naștere unor consecinţe catastrofale pe distanţe mult mai mari, petrolul răspândindu-se în toate oceanele lumii.
Pelicula va fi regizată de Paul Berg (Lone Survivor, Hancock, Battleship), iar din distribuţie fac parte Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Johnson Malkovich, David O’Brien şi Kate Hudson. Deepwater Horizon se va lansa pe 30 septembrie 2016.
