The Core, e un film american SF lansat în 2003, regizat de Jon Amiel după un scenariu scris de Cooper Layne şi John Rogers. Producătorul şi scenaristul Cooper Layne vizita Hawaii când a fost fascinat de spectacolul oferit de lava curgând în mare şi răcindu-se la contactul cu apa. S-a gândit atunci că prin craterul unui vulcan se poate pătrunde spre inima Pământului cu condiţia să ai un vehicol adecvat. Aşa s-a născut ideea acestui film.
Când o inexplicabilă catastrofă loveşte globul în diverse puncte geografice (în SUA mor 32 de civili care au instalate implanturi cardiace), geofizicianul Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart) şi expertul francez în arme nucleare Dr. Sergei Leveque (Tchéky Karyo) sunt convocaţi de Generalul Thomas Purcell (Richard Jenkins) la Washington DC să stabilească dacă poate fi vorba despre o acţiune criminală premeditată. Apoi în Londra, în piaţa Trafalgar, păsările nu se mai pot orienta şi se lovesc de clădiri şi oameni. Nava spaţială Endeavour, condusă de comandantul Robert Iverson (Bruce Greenwood), la intrarea în atmosfera Pământului, nu are traiectoria corectă, deşi computerul o arată ca fiind bună. Nava spaţială trebuie să aterizeze în Los Angeles. Maiorul Rebecca Childs (Hilary Swank) salvează situaţia găsind un loc de aterizare unde să nu fie victime.
Problema e că într-un an, toată lumea de pe Pământ va muri. Pământul e învăluit de un câmp invizibil de energie. E format din electricitate şi magnetism, de aceea se numeşte câmp electromagnetic. De la el avem polii magnetici. El ne protejează de radiaţia cosmică. Scoarţa Pământului, cea pe care noi trăim, are o grosime de 48 de km. Apoi urmează mantaua care are vreo 3200 de km grosime. Nucleul e de fapt partea complicată. Are două părţi: nucleul interior şi cel exterior. Cel interior e o bucată mare, solidă de fier. El e înconjurat de nucleul exterior, care e lichid. Dar cel mai important e că acest lichid se roteşte constant în aceeaşi direcţie cu 1600 km/h. Metal incadescent în mişcare rapidă de câmp electromagnetic. Nucleul exterior rotativ e motorul câmpului electromagnetic. Acest motor s-a oprit. Nucleul Pământului nu se mai roteşte, deci câmpul electromagnetic se dezintegreză.
Dacă problema nu se rezolvă de urgenţă, atunci avioanele vor începe să cadă şi toate dispozitivele electronice vor fi scoase din funcţiune. Electricitatea statică va crea super furtuni cu descărcări electrice foarte dese, iar radiaţiile solare vor coace efectiv Pământul. Dr. Keyes împreună cu renumitul geofizician Dr. Conrad Zimsky (Stanley Tucci), un arogant om de ştiinţă, ajung la concluzia că doar ajungând la miezul Pământului pot salva nucleul şi, automat, omenirea. Dar cum? Oamenii au călătorit în spaţiu (acolo e simplu, e doar vid) dar niciodată nu au mers în interiorul Pământului. Recordul omenirii de coborâre e de 11 km cu un burghiu de 5 m.
Trăind într-o parte a deşertului Utah, un strălucit om de ştiinţă, Dr. Ed Brazzeldon (Delroy Lindo), a construit un vehicol subteran, pe nume Virgil, cu care toţi speră acum să poată pătrunde adânc în Pământ. Misiunea este acum a lui Keyes împreună cu o grupă de oameni de ştiinţă precum şi cei care vor pilota acest vehicol, maiorul Rebecca Childs şi comandantul Robert Iverson. Misiunea lor este să detoneze un dispozitiv nuclear care va reactiva câmpul magnetic si va salva lumea de la distrugere. Este o călătorie spre o frontieră necunoscută unde niciun om nu a ajuns până acum.
Pe o temă asemănătoare celei a filmului Centrul Pământului s-a mai ecranizat cartea lui Jules Verne, dar povestea este la nivelul unei epoci cu 150 de ani în urmă din punct de vedere ştiinţific şi are un alt aer. În acest film nu e vorba de a găsi monştri sau oraşe pierdute. E vorba de ceea ce ştiinţa cunoaşte despre centrul Pământului, combinat cu imaginaţia artistică. Toate elementele au dimensiuni şi mărimi reale. S-au făcut multe încercări până s-a ajuns la forma şi dimensiunea convenabilă a vehicolului. S-a ţinut cont de informaţia reală asupra temperaturilor. S-a ajuns la un vehicol de 70 m lungime şi 10 m înălţime. Acesta a fost realizat în mărime naturală şi totul s-a filmat în el. Pentru a crea mişcarea s-a folosit un sistem de air bag-uri care pot suporta o mare greutate şi care sunt mai silenţioase decât un sistem hidraulic. Scenele de exterior s-au filmat în principal în deşertul Utah.
Oameni de ştiinţă printre care şi Einstein au studiat câmpul magnetic al Pământului. Aceştia au demonstrat că, în timp, se constată o scădere a puterii acestui câmp. Inspirat atât din realitate cât şi din extrapolări ale ştiinţei, Centrul Pământului este în ultimă instanţă rodul imaginaţiei. Un alt aspect controversat este ceea ce s-ar afla în miezul Pământului. Există păreri că temperatura foarte mare ar determina combinaţii de fier şi nichel care au proprietăți magnetice, după cum există teorii conform cărora ar exista un gigantic reactor de plutoniu şi uraniu ce arde sub noi. O altă enigmă este faptul că polii magnetici ai planetei noastre se schimbă la fiecare 250 de mii de ani.
