Blestemate fie coșmarurile pe care nu o să le am la noapte pentru că n-am să dorm, who needs sleep?! sleep is for the weak, blestemate fie sperieturile care mi-au dat motive să bag sprint până acasă după film și blestemate fie tipele care cloncăneau și au stricat atmosfera filmului cu râsete și comentarii aiurea. Când te duci la un film, îți pui fermoar la gură și taci că nu interesează pe nimeni secțiunea ta de comentarii live, dar na, o fi și ăsta un mod de a te apăra de sperieturi. Dacă râzi puțin după o fază de groază e foarte probabil ca aia să fi fost o descărcare nervoasă (râzi ca să nu plângi), dar când râzi înainte de film și aleatoriu de-a lungul peliculei, atunci nu ai prea multe speranțe.
Dar să revenim la The Forest, care a reușit să mă sperie, deci și-a atins scopul cu brio – v-am zis că nu mai dorm la noapte?. Având la bază o idee excelentă – o fată care pleacă să-și caute sora într-o pădure în care oamenii pierduți merg să se regăsească prin moarte (și sursa de inspirație e cât se poate de veritabilă – chiar există o astfel de pădure în Japonia), Jason Zada (regizor) și Nick Antosca, Sarah Cornwell și Ben Ketai (scenariști) au reușit să ofere spectatorului o poveste cu puternice tente psihologice, care se poate numi horror, dar la fel de bine și thriller. De ce spun asta? Pentru că și pădurea devine un personaj, mulat exact după trăirile din ce în ce mai întunecate ale personajelor atrase în hățiș.
Sara și Jess sunt două surori gemene interpretate de Natalie Dormer, care trăiesc la mii de kilometri distanță, una în Japonia, una în SUA, dar sunt mereu „conectate” printr-o legătură aproape supranaturală de care doar gemenii se bucură. Atunci când Sara începe să perceapă semnale de alarmă pe unda lui Jess, nu vede altă soluție decât să se ducă în Japonia, să-și caute sora pierdută în pădurea Aokigahara, un tărâm al supranaturalului și al groazei. Dar căutarea surorii începe să dezvăluie mici bucăți din Sara pe care aceasta le ascundea adânc în suflet, pe măsură ce pădurea începe să-și trimită demonii la vânătoare, pentru că pădurea scoate ce-i mai rău din tine și-l asmute asupra ta.
Atmosfera e destul de sufocantă, în contrast cu spațiosul teren pe care se desfășoară întreaga acțiune. Folosindu-se de un decor superb pe timpul zilei, dar transformat în mașină de speriat pe timpul nopții, creatorii filmului redau un mit care încă e foarte temut în Japonia prin perspectiva unei fete disperate care-și caută geamăna. Dar Sara nu pleacă de una singură în pădure, Aiden (Taylor Kinney) și Michi (Yukiyoshi Ozawa) o însoțesc – primul e un jurnalist care o ajută nu doar din solidaritate, ci și din interese proprii, pe când Michi e ghidul japonez sau vocea superstiției, singurul care conștientizează pericolul ce-i pândește pe protagoniști.
Dacă pădurea pe întuneric nu vi se pare suficient de înfricoșătoare, locuitorii acesteia – ubasute și yurei, spirite unele mai groaznice ca altele – sigur vă vor face pielea de găină. Mai ales pentru că știți foarte bine că totul se petrece în capul protagonistei, că nimic nu e real și așa ceva nu se poate întâmpla, dar tot nu vă puteți stăpâni și vă trec fiorii. Monștrii imaginați de noi sunt mai răi decât tot ce există în realitate, pentru că reflectă demonii interiori și frica ce ne macină. Sau poate vina, și asta roade la fel de tare. Într-un loc în care ești singur cu tine, strigătele de ajutor pe care le auzi vin chiar din interiorul tău.
Ritmul filmului prinde viteză cu cât ne îndreptăm spre deznodământ, stând cu sufletul la gură pentru Sara, știind totuși mai multe decât ea sau cel puțin intuind ce va urma, pentru că nu noi ne confruntăm cu un trecut marcat de tragedie. Mi-au plăcut scenele de urmărire prin pădure și îngrozitoarele apariții ale spiritelor, actorii japonezi, chiar și când n-au machiaje speciale să pară fantome și apar în forma lor… umană, tot îngrozitori arată ca mimică. Brr, te ia frigul. Totuși, mi-ar fi plăcut să-l văd pe Michi mai implicat. Natalie Dormer a cam dus toată povara poveștii, cu dublul său rol, dar sincer să spun – mi s-a părut mai naturală în scurtele momente când era Jess, poate pentru că tipul de fată conservatoare și cuminte nu o prinde la fel de bine.
