Zi de instrucție, titlu original Training day, e un thriller lansat în 2001 regizat de Antoine Fuqua după un scenariu scris de David Ayer. E un thriller realist a cărui acțiune e plasată în lumea ambiguă din punct de vedere moral a investigațiilor făcute de polițiștii sub acoperire. Într-un moment în care poliția din toată țara se luptă cu o imagine publică de corupție excesivă, utilizare de narcotice, plasare de probe și brutalitate exagerată în timp ce patrulează pe cele mai sărace străzi din America, Zi de instrucție descrie portretul realist și palpitant al războiului dus în liniile de front urbane și cât de mari pot fi costurile acestei bătălii.
Zi de instrucție prezintă veșnica luptă dintre bine și rău transpusă în relația a doi polițiști (un boboc și un polițist cu o experiență de 13 ani) pe durata a 24 de ore. Alonzo Harrris e cel desemnat să-l instruiască pe Jack Hoyt. Jake Hoyt are la dispoziție o zi și doar o zi pentru a-i dovedi lui Alonzo că e în stare să lucreze la brigada narcotice Los Angeles. Doar că Alonzo susține că tehnicile învățate la Academia de poliție sunt inutile pe străzile controlate de gangsteri, traficanți de droguri și de carne vie. Tensiunea și intensitatea filmului derivă din viziunea regizorului Antoine Fuqua, care s-a străduit să arate publicului spectator nu numai ce fac ofițerii de poliție la suprafață ci și partea nevăzută a meseriei lor în care se războiesc cu o lume imorală de traficanți de droguri, criminali, violatori și hoți. E un film dur și prezintă partea întunecată a „războiului” împotriva drogurilor.
Antoine Fuqua i-a ajutat pe Washington si Hawke să se pregătească pentru rolurile lor oferindu-le ocazia să se întâlnească cu oameni care locuiesc în unele dintre cele mai notorii cartiere din Los Angeles, inclusiv membrii ai unor bande de cartier și traficanți de droguri. Fuqua i-a încurajat pe cei doi actori principali să stea de vorbă cu câțiva consultanți pe probleme de poliție. Pentru a păstra autenticitatea filmului, s-a apelat la serviciile unor consultanți de specialitate.
