În realitate, Boxtrolii sunt niște creaturi ale canalelor extrem de blânde și de inofensive, un pic ciudate, din cauză că poartă cutii de carton reciclate ca pe un fel de carapace.
Boxtrolii au crescut un băiețel orfan, OUȚ (voce originală: Isaac Hempstead-Wright, voce dublaj română: Cristi Neacșu) încă de când era un bebeluș, ca pe unul de-al lor. Distracția lor preferată e să scormonească prin lucrurile aruncate de oameni, în general mașinării stricate, și să ia cu ei ce li se pare mai interesant, pentru a le repara sau modifica după cum doresc.
Pentru că tot orașul e convins că Boxtrolii sunt niște dăunători periculoși, mai-marii din înalta societate îl tocmesc pe Archibald Snatcher (voce originală: Sir Ben Kingsley, voce dublaj română: Petre Lupu), un ticălos cu două fețe, să îi eradicheze. Convins că așa își va croi drum spre nobilimea din Podu-Brânzei, acesta începe un atac fără amploare împotriva nevinovatelor creaturi. În fața pericolului exterminării, Boxtrolii au un singur aliat care poate crea o punte între lumea lor subterană, și cea a oamenilor – Ouț, care, împreună cu noua lui prietenă, Winnie (voce originală: Elle Fanning, voce dublaj română: Cătălina Chirțan) vor putea aduce o schimbare în orașul obsedat de brânză, dar și de răzbunare.
