Minți diabolice, titlu original Murder by numbers, e un thriller psihologic lansat în 2002 produs și regizat de Barbet Schroeder, după un scenariu scris de Tony Gayton. Minți diabolice a fost conceput inițial de producătorul Richard Crystal. Crystal a fost mereu fascinat de cazul istoric Leopold și Loeb din anul 1924. Acel caz implica doi tineri inteligenți care au pus la cale un plan de răpire/ucidere, sub forma unui joc elaborat care avea ca scop „crima perfectă”.
Cassie Mayweather e un detectiv de la criminalistică ce se confruntă cu propria tragedie și își urmărește institnctul în ceea ce-i privește pe criminalii unei tinere necunoscute ucisă și abandonată. Indicile conduc într-o direcțiem dar lanțul e prea perfect. Ceva din acest caz îi aminteşte lui Cassie de întamplări din trecutul ei, exact într-un moment în care i se cere să apară la o audiere într-o mai veche problemă de poliţie . Cine e criminalul? Prietenia dintre Richard si Justin este oarecum ciudată. Deși provin din familii din clasa de mijloc cu o bună situație materială, dar au personalități total diferite. Părinții acestora duc o viață separată de ei. Ei sunt legați de părinții lor din punct de vedere material. Nu trebuie să muncească sau să aibe responsabilități. Familiile lor sunt lumi independente de cea a lor, astfel încât ei nu au simțul loialității sau al responsabilității față de marea comunitate. Părinții nu sunt decât producători de lucruri materiale pentru copiii lor și își urmează carierele cu entuziasm, spunându-și probabil că o fac pentru fii lor.
Deși cei 2 par diferiți, ei au multe lucruri în comun. Ei s-au întâlnit și au format o prietenie secretă. Au transformat o căsuță părăsită într-un club unde se întâlneau în secret. De-a lungul timpului ei și-au încredințat secrete și fantezii specifice băieților. Fiind plictisiși deoarece viața lor e lipsită de evenimente, băieții pun la cale un plan care să le garanteze loialitatea totală a unuia față de celălalt pentru, a împărtăși o experiență pe care puțini au cunoscut-o… „Hai să încercăm să comitem crima perfectă!” Deși la început toul e perceput ca o glumă, această glumă se transformă într*o provocare. Cel puțin asta este teoria lui Cassie, o teorie care a luat naștere din trecutul ei și talentul ei înnăscut de specialist în criminalistică. Rezolvarea acestei „crime perfecte” o forțează pe Cassie Mayweather să înfrunte și să se elibereze de trecutul ei chinuitor pe care l-a îngropat cu mult timp în urmă.
Scenariul e foarte bine elaborat. Ceea ce începe ca un joc de-a șoarecele și pisica între Cassie și tânărul suspectat, devine ca o partidă de șah. Cine face o mutare greșită pierde. Schroder la fel ca majoritatea omenilor a fost intigat de povestea lui Leopold și Loeb. Nu doar scenariul și regia sunt excelent, ci și actorii. Ryan Golsing şi Michael Pitt sunt formidabili în rolurile lui Richard şi Justin. Sunt băieţii răi din film, dar într-un fel vă va păra rău pentru ei. Acest thriller are tot ce-i trebuie: o eroină forbidabilă, băieţi răi şi mult material psihologic.
Întrebarea e care din cei 2 e criminalul?! E un thriller care vă va da fiori pe șira spinării și nu veți afla decât la final cine e adevăratul criminal. Sau poate sunt mai mulți?!
