“By the Sea” este o dramă scrisă și regizată de Angelina Jolie, în care joacă alături de Brad Pitt. Filmul este prima colaborare a îndrăgitului cuplu, cunoscut sub numele de Brangelina, de la “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”, lansat acum 10 ani.

Și-a făcut debutul cu filmul “In the Land of Blood and Honey” și a continuat cu “Unbroken”, ambele fiind proiecte ambițioase, care tratează subiecte dificile, primul – războiul din Bosnia, și al doilea – viața unui soldat american, care este capturat de japonezi și torturat în timpul celui de-al doilea război mondial. Pentru cel de-al treilea proiect regizoral, Angelina Jolie a ales “By the Sea”.
Acțiunea are loc în Franța, în anii 1970. Vanessa (Angelina Jolie), o fostă dansatoare, și soțul ei Roland (Brad Pitt), un scriitor american, se duc în sudul Franței pentru câteva luni. Roland dorește să scrie o nouă carte și a avut la un moment dat o carieră promițătoare, însă acum el petrece mai mult timp povestind celorlalți că este scriitor decât să scrie propriu-zis o carte, în timp ce Vanessa vrea să scape de o traumă despre care evită să vorbească.
Roland și Vanessa sunt căsătoriți de 14 ani, dar nu au o căsnicie fericită. Se poate observa cu ușurință acest lucru încă din primele 5 minute ale filmului. Amândoi suferă, însă nu pot comunica.

Răspunsurile le primim la finalul filmului, însă nu mi s-a părut modul cel mai inspirat de a prezenta cauza sau cauzele care au dus mariajul lor în acel stadiu. Din punctul meu de vedere, Angelina Jolie este o regizoare bună, însă consider că are probleme atunci când vine vorba de scenariu. Se pricepe să regizeze, însă, cel puțin în cazul filmului “By the Sea”, dialogul pe alocuri a lăsat de dorit, iar anumite scene importante, cu momente de tensiune, nu au avut intensitate și consider că acest lucru se datorează scenariului și, îndeosebi, modului mai puțin inspirat de a construi dialogul. Un alt motiv ar putea fi și faptul că Angelina a jucat cu Brad Pitt, soțul ei din viața reală, și i-a fost cu siguranță greu să lucreze cu o persoană atât de apropiată și să prezinte publicului un cuplu care se confruntă cu probleme atât de grave cum este cazul lui Roland și al Vanessei. Jolie a declarat în cadrul unui interviu pentru Directors Guild of America, că i-a fost foarte greu să regizeze “By the Sea”. Poate ar fi fost mai bine să fie aleși alți protagoniști, iar Jolie să se ocupe doar de scenariu și regie.
În concluzie, “By the Sea”, filmul care i-a adus din nou împreună pe Angelina Jolie și Brad Pitt pe marile ecrane, nu este ceea ce mulți dintre noi ne așteptam.
